The group planning the July 17 seminar decided that any seminar on criticism would benefit from a common text to ground the discussion. The planners have chosen Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" for the July 17 seminar.
The Southern Colloquium on Rhetoric will hold its second seminar on July 17 from 1 until 5pm at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. The topic is Psychoanalysis and Rhetoric. Mary Stuckey will host a cookout after the seminar for those who can stay. Capacity for both events is limited. Please contact Teresa Morales if you would like to attend, and let her know if you plan to join us for the seminar only or for the seminar and the cookout. As decided by the SCoR steering committee, faculty will have first option on the available places in the seminar. Spaces not claimed by faculty will be given to graduate students beginning on July 3.
A debate beween Joshua Gunn and Christian Lundberg along with a recent book by Jacques Lacan will provide our core readings. Both Josh Gunn and Chris Lundberg will be joining us for the seminar. There will be additional readings, but the readings that have been set thus far are:
Gunn, Joshua. "Refitting fantasy: psychoanalysis, subjectivity, and talking to the dead." Quarterly Journal of Speech 90.1 (Feb. 2004): 1-23
Gunn, Joshua. "On Dead Subjects: A Rejoinder to Lundberg on (a) Psychoanalytic Rhetoric." Quarterly Journal of Speech 90.4 (Nov. 2004): 501-513
Lacan, Jacques. My Teaching. Verso, 2009.
Lundberg, Christian. "The Royal Road Not Taken: Joshua Gunn's "Refitting Fantasy: Psychoanalysis, Subjectivity and Talking to the Dead" and Lacan's Symbolic Order." Quarterly Journal of Speech 90.4 (Nov. 2004): 495-500.
Location
We will meet in room 1020, One Park Place South on the GSU campus.
Click here for driving directions to the GSU campus. For those taking MARTA, take any line to the 5 Points Station. Exit the Peachtree St exit and look to your left for the large, neon Coca-Cola sign, which is perched on a building adjacent to One Park Place South.
For navigating on campus, use the downloadable zoomable pdf campus map. There should be plenty of parking available on the G Deck (section C2 of the campus map), and there are commercial parking lots in the area, including one directly across Decatur St from One Park Place South (Peachtree and Decatur Streets). One Park Place South is #20 on the campus map, section B5.
If anyone gets lost or has any problems, you can call the Dept of Communication main office at 404.413.5600 or James Darsey at 404.931.6758.
The Southern Colloquium on Rhetoric with the generous support of SSCA's Southern Forensics Association Division will be hosting a panel discussion at SSCA's conference in Norfolk. The panel will focus on analysis of the media's presentation of the financial meltdown in the fall of 2008.
In order to focus and facilitate the discussion, a limited set of texts has been chosen. Four panelists will make very brief opening statements focusing on some aspect of this set of texts, after which the floor will be open to discussion. Those wishing to participate in the discussion are encouraged to preview the texts. The list is provided below.
The panel is scheduled for 1:30 Friday afternoon, #3402 in the convention program. Mary Stuckey (Georgia State U) will moderate. Panelists are Beth S. Bennett (U Alabama), Barbara Biesecker (U Georgia), James Darsey (Georgia State U), and Pat Gehrke (U South Carolina).
Join us in Norfolk!!

We are pleased to announce the first substantive meeting of SCoR to be hosted by Barbara Biesecker and Celeste
Condit at the University of Georgia on Friday, Feb 20, noon-4pm, Rm 104 Coverdell Bldg (directions below).
There will be an afternoon break with beverages and cookies provided, but attendees will want to get lunch in advance.
The theme for this meeting is affect and rhetoric. The readings for the meeting are:
Brian Massumi's, "The Autonomy of Affect" (PARABLES FOR THE VIRTUAL)
Teresa Brennan's "Interpreting the Flesh" (THE TRANSMISSION OF AFFECT)
Lauren Berlant's "Cruel Optimism: On Marx, Loss and the Senses" (New
Formations, Winter 2007/2008, Issue 63, p. 33-51).
In keeping with our design to keep this group informal, there is no
registration fee, no membership, no dues, no officers, no by-laws. Do the
readings and come prepared for some excellent and stimulating discussion!
Directions to the Coverdell Building and Parking Lot:
Click here for a map of the UGA campus.
The Coverdell Building is located just below the midline of this map. The nearest big landmark is the Stegeman Coliseum.
One Suggested Driving Direction:
Get off the "Bypass" (aka "loop 10") at College Station Road. Turn West and proceed on College Station Rd. to Carlton Street.
Turn Right onto Carlton St.
Turn Left at the next Street to DW Brooks Drive.
Go Past the Coverdell Building and Take an Immediate Right.
Drive Straight Back to the Carlton Street Parking Deck. This is a pay lot that is open to visitors for a fee until it gets full. We may be able to get coupons for you.
Please feel free to pass this message on to colleagues. If you're planning to attend, please RSVP to SCoR's adminstrative assistant, Teresa Morales. We need to have some idea of attendance in case it's necessary to change the room to accommodate us. You should also contact Teresa if you'd like to be added to our mailing list.
If you can't join us in Athens on February 20, SCoR is also organizing a panel for the Southern Communication Association conference in Norfolk; we may host another half-day seminar over the summer; and the College of Charleston has volunteered to host a seminar in the fall where Brian McGee has promised us an excursion on the bay on a three-masted schooner.
