Country Muses and Public Controversy: The 2017 CMA Awards and Gun Control

Thanks to program planners Kevin Marinelli and Lisa Corrigan, the Southern Colloquium on Rhetoric will, this year, mark its ninth year at the SSCA annual conference.

The theme for the Nashville convention is "Muses and Musings in the Music City," and the call includes this suggestion: "The state capital of Tennessee, Nashville bills itself as “Music City, USA” and its music industry is the second largest in the United States. There are countless opportunities to submit work in the area of music and communication from multiple interests and epistemological stances."
 
We have decided to focus the SCoR panel on an intersection between the music scene in Nashville and politics, specifically on the rhetoric surrounding the Country Music Association's decision in 2017 to try to avoid politics by regulating, in the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, what could be said during the awards show about gun control. The strategy not only created a substantial rhetoric from prominent Nashville artists about gun control, it also created a substantial rhetoric about the effort to control rhetoric.

A distinguished group of scholars will open the conversation by providing short critical statements, after which, the floor will be open for discussion. In the tradition of SCoR seminars, this is intended to be a participation event rather than a spectator sport. Look at the suggested readings, find some of your own, and come prepared to join the conversation.
